The Ultimate Personal Finance Summer Reading List For 2020

July 29, 2020

Are you looking to improve your financial foundation and money habits this summer? As a financial coach, I’ve read hundreds of books on finance and self-improvement, but these are the ones I keep coming back to and recommend to everyone.

Best Personal Finance Books for Summer 2020

  1. Your Money or Your Life — Vicki Robin & Joe Dominguez
This book helped me transform my relationship with money. Once you understand that time is your most scarce resource — you’ll see how important it is to take control of your financial future. Vicki Robin shows you how to calculate your real hourly wage, and lays the foundations of financial independence. This book is a classic and a must-read for everyone.
  2. The Color of Money — Mehrsa Baradaran
Personal finance, inequity, and racism are deeply linked. This book will help you understand the racial wealth gap in America and how we got to where we are today. I can’t think of a more timely book to read in light of the current events taking place right now.
  3. Atomic Habits — James Clear
This book has helped me build new habits and break bad ones. When it comes to finances, our daily habits play a huge role in determining our financial future. If you struggle with bad habits this book will help you change that. Instead of making big dramatic changes overnight, try focusing on getting just 1% better every day. Do this in every aspect of your life and you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve long term.
  4. Quit Like a Millionaire — Kristy Shen & Brice Leung
Many have questioned or never heard of the FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early) movement, but this book provides a compelling case for why it can be attractive. The authors are millennials who retired in their 30’s and now travel the world as digital nomads. While this path definitely isn’t for everyone, there is much to be learned in this book that can help you get ahead financially, especially for millennials. If you don’t think it’s possible to retire early, read this book.
  5. Financial Freedom — Grant Sabatier
This book has been life-changing for me as an entrepreneur. I had the pleasure of meeting Grant a few years back and had to include his book on my list. Grant achieved financial independence in under a decade through the power of entrepreneurship. Even if entrepreneurship isn’t for you, I’m confident you’ll find practical advice in this book to help you get ahead financially and start your path to financial freedom.
  6. I Will Teach You To Be Rich — Ramit Sethi
I remember reading the original version of this book a decade ago and so much of it still rings true today. Last year I met Ramit at FinCon and he just released an updated version of his best-selling book. “Spend extravagantly on the things you love, and cut costs mercilessly on the things you don’t.” I lived ultra frugally to get out of debt for a few years, but now I follow this philosophy when it comes to determining how I spend and it has changed how I live my life.

Each of these books influenced my way of thinking when it comes to money and life, and that’s why they’ve earned a spot on my summer reading list. These books are sure to inspire you to take action and enhance your understanding and relationship with your money. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
